I have an insatiable attraction to people and causes in need. My initial introduction to for instance, Blue Moon Equine Rescue and Sanctuary, was supervising two of my children who visited and fed the donkeys, pigs and elderly horses at the owner, Anna’s, ranch. I inquired what else the nonprofit facility might need; the answer was shade structures for the animals. Since NervLab warehouse stores scads of recyclable exhibits from past clients, I invited Anna to see one of the first of four improvised structures made from sign frames, lighting fixtures and corrugated metal offal from commercial building in our warehouse complex. In addition, my wife and I love to support local businesses and artists and businesses with a heart. We purchase t-shirts and swag from bands and causes. We also buy art and jewelry made all over the world to help empower women and marginalized people starting businesses. Sometimes our initial attraction becomes a bigger mission to understand more about the world. My daughter Jensen, as a high school National Merit scholar, did a video project on a religious tolerance program. We visited churches, temples, mosques, and hosted Native American and Wiccan ceremonial explanations; and I have found myself volunteering, donating and tithing ever since. Our youngest two kids were involved with Wee Volunteer in Dallas, working with Meals on Wheels and more. Since we moved to Georgetown, they have volunteered with Austin’s Generation Serve and at Blue Moon as well as supporting neighbor All Things Wild Animal Rehab. NervLab continues to volunteer at Blue Moon and has been picking up and delivering coastal squares and rounds of hay in addition to working on barns, buildings, trailers and buses. We have met some incredible humans along the way.

Randy Mecca has been showing kids and adults with disabilities how to play disc golf as a way of recreational therapy. For those who don’t know what disc golf is, think golf but with a frisbee.
Mecca, who lost his left leg due to complications from a birth defect, has primarily worked with the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and the Dallas Amputee Network. He helps organize at least 10 events a year where kids and adults with disabilities learn or compete on a disc golf course. He often teaches lessons on the front lawn of the Scottish Rite Hospital where you’ll find a disc golf course.
